How often do you really think about having your drains cleaned?
Most Householders probably donât think about it at all. They may not even realize that to keep your homes drains functioning, they should be cleaned and serviced regularly. Many things like hair and grease from cooking, go down drains, this over time can cause build up and then blockages and overflows. The next thing a property owner knows is he is taking a shower in a puddle of water. A few tips can keep your drain flowing smoothly.
When Should I have a drain clean?
There is a lot of ideas about how often drains should be cleaned. Cleaning the drain is a task that doesnât take long to do. The first thing is that it is done regularly and becomes part of a property ownerâs routine. About once every month is ideal to clean a drain because it isnât a huge amount of time in everyday life, but itâs also regular enough to keep drains flowing freely. Taking the time once a month to drain clean could end up saving you money in the long run. Drain problems ignored could become expensive plumbing problems.
How Should I Clean a Drain?
There are some relatively simple ways to keep drains flowing. One is after washing pots, pans and dishes or meal preparation, turn on the hot tap and run it in the sink to clear out the drain. About twice a week, pour a half cup of baking soda, then a half cup of vinegar down the drain.
If the drain seems to block easily, start by pouring a half cup of baking soda down the drain. Immediately follow that with a half cup of salt. Then pour a half cup of vinegar in and it will foam. About 60 seconds later pour about 2 litres of boiling water down the drain.
There are some things that can be done to prevent blockages. Purchase a filter to cover the drain to catch hair and other things that can go down and block the drain. If there is an item that is non biodegradable it canât can go down the drain and needs to be thrown in the garbage. Some items that should absolutely not go down the drain are grounds from coffee machines, cooking grease, chewing gum, baby wipes, cotton, and hair.
Following these simple rules should help keep drains flowing. If you have any problems, contact King Plumbing for all plumbing and drain cleaning needs.
